Often overlooked,
getting listed in the directory sections of search engines represents
the best promotional strategy for web sites that provide superior
content to their audiences. These categories are edited by real
people who visit and evaluate web sites. In this instance, cleverly
drafted META TAGS and titles won't help you. The only requirement:
a great web site.
Unfortunately
in most cases, being considered for inclusion in the directories
of the top search engines does not happen by chance. Seldom will
an category editor visit your web site for evaluation unless
he or she has been invited.
The smart approach
is to invite the editor(s) who will list your site on several
of the top engines at once. These editors work on the Open Directory
Project (ODP), a project where volunteers edit categories in
an effort to "produce the most comprehensive directory of
the Web." While Netscape Corporation owns the copyright
to the compilation of the editors' contributions, it also makes
the directory available for use by other companies under an open
license agreement. As a result, search engines and metasearch
engines around the world have opted to include part or even the
entire ODP directory in their own search engines categories.
Therefore by submitting your site for review by an editor of
the ODP, you open the doors to the directories of more than 90
search engines. These engines include:

Submitting your web site is very easy and should take a few minutes
of your time. Remember that your submission does not necessarily
guarantee that your site will be included in the directory. Yet,
if you feel your site deserves to be classified, you need to
persevere and re-submit it after a few weeks.
Submission
procedure:
1. Go the the web site that hosts the ODP (www.dmoz.org)
2. Locate the category or categories that best describe your
activities
3. Click on the "Add URL" link located on the top of
the page.
4. Enter your site's URL, Title, and brief description.
5. Submit.
It may take
a few weeks for an editor to evaluate your site. Once your site
has been included you should update your listing every time significant
changes have been made to your site.
